Jack's Point is a 1200 hectare (3000 acre) settlement in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world - on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, just 15 minutes from Queenstown, New Zealand. Over 15 years in the planning, Jack's Point will feature over 1300 residential homes, a lakeside village with accommodation, restaurants and shops, a luxury lodge, a championship golf course and over 35 kms of hiking, biking and equestrian trails.
What sets Jack's Point apart is the absolute commitment to the landscape - only 5% of this vast area will be built upon - but also the acknowledgment of the importance of that environment in every aspect of our lives. Jack’s Point is 5% settlement, 95% preserve and 100% life.
It seems almost unbelievable that one could purchase such a property as this for as little as this home is offered for. Particularly when you look at the opportunity for a lifestyle unique to Jacks Point and the stunning region we live in.
It may be that the economic conditions of last year will assist you, with this “sure to be attractive” level pitched well below what these homes would historically sell at.
You see, this is a case of falling in love with an overall parcel; the mighty Remarkables, the skifields, the golf course(s), the open spaces, crisp air and convenience.
Notwithstanding that the hugely successful North American ski resort developer; Intrawest, is forecast to develop the Jacks Point Village. Without stating the obvious as to convenience, the opportunity for capital growth will be simply immense; I’m sure you will agree.
The house we offer here is a real easy-care-&-no-stair sun trap that simply basks in our north sun. Very private, with outdoor living courts enjoying the best of the day, and the views.
3 spacious bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an office, along with generous north facing living areas. Decorated in exquisite neutrals, comfort has been at top of mind, with under tile heating, and a large central gas fire.
This property includes a membership to the Jacks Point Golf Course, said by many to be one of the finest new courses in the entire world.

Rough hewn schist is the bedrock which underlies Jacks Point, and upon which much of it has been built. Just as sheep pens and farm buildings were built here over the last 150 years, the stonework reflects permanence and craftsmanship, but also acknowledges the surrounding topography, as solid and rugged as The Remarkables above.
Seen from a distance, the first impression of Jacks Point is space, green and gold tussock grassland, massive areas of native vegetation and an undisturbed lake-front. In all, over 800 hectares has been incorporated into 'The Preserve'. This also includes an extensive restored wetland, native songbird habitat, working farm and golf course. All is linked seamlessly, via a network of trails, into the village and homesites.
Towards the Remarkables there are several distinct, close-knit neighbourhoods overlooking the central lake and Village. This is the hub of Jacks Point - busy, vibrant, and colourful, alleyways lined with shops, hotels, apartments, bars and restaurants. Moving west uphill is 'The Ridge', a luxury, eco-lodge overlooking both the village and the expanse of Lake Wakatipu and mountain beyond, and dotted within the Preserve are 36 of the most beautiful home-sites with commanding views to the north and west.
Weaving throughout much of this expanse is the 6506 metre (7150 yard), par 72 Jacks Point Golf Course, the latest in a series of Darby Partners golf masterpieces, (which includes the nearby Hills Golf Club, recently hosting the NZ Open and part of the European Tour for the next three years). With breathtaking 360 degree views, the course takes full advantage of Jacks' natural terrain, winding among dramatic outcrops of alpine rock and swathes of Matagouri and native bush.
Golfers of any calibre can enjoy the course (and the additional 9 hole executive course and practice facilities), and for those who prefer to walk unimpeded, the walking trails weave around the fairways enabling anyone to walk the landscape without disturbing sheep or golfers.
Completely undisturbed is the extensive lake-front, with open and easy access to all. At the widest 'elbow' of Lake Wakatipu, the views are breathtaking. Fresh, deep and crystal clear, salmon and trout can be seen feeding close inshore; a neighbouring marina at Homestead Bay providing access to sail and motor boating.
Each element within Jacks Point has been designed to work along the natural contours of the land. Similarly, some of the best architects in the world have been tasked with delivering timeless yet contemporary structures that resonate with the surrounding topography.
The one material integral to much of this design is the stone - solid, sustainable, and elegant. Ironically, just as it provided shelter and stability for the last 150 years, it will now provide the foundations to take Jacks Point into the future.
The Playground
In winter Queenstown's average temperature hovers between 1 - 10 degrees, snow falling to lake level no more than 2 or 3 times, and rarely for long. In summer that average rests between 10 - 22 degrees, the sun setting towards ten o'clock leaving a long, balmy twilight. The result: year round access to superb recreation, and optimum growing conditions for the best Pinot Noir in Australasia.
From Jacks Point you can be skiing at The Remarkables directly above, or Coronet Peak across the valley, within 30 minutes. Another half hour, and you arrive at either Cardrona skifield, Waiorau Snow Farm (for cross country skiing) and The Snow Park (for extreme snow boarding). And still within easy distance, overlooking neighbouring Lake Wanaka, is Treble Cone - all six ski fields offering excellent conditions through the winter months, offering the training and competition base for northern hemisphere ski and snowboarding teams.
It's an over used cliché, but Queenstown is deservedly known as the 'Adventure Capital'. The recreational pursuits roll off the tongue - tramping (or hiking), rock climbing, mountain biking, airborne sports, windsurfing, kayaking, jet-boating and rafting - all are easily accessible within minutes, and offering some of the best conditions in the world. World Heritage Status Fiordland and Aspiring National Parks - famous for the Milford and Routeburn tracks, are on the western skyline, within an hour's drive or a 10 minute flight.
The region has emerged as a golfing mecca, thanks in no small part to Darby Partners, which has designed three of the six golf courses in the Wakatipu basin - world class Millbrook, The Hills and now Jacks Point.
As a natural complement, the region boasts some of the best wines in Australasia, if not the world, in particular Pinot Noir with at least 30 award-winning wineries within a short distance of Jacks Point. Amisfield Winery, for example, with its spectacular views across the lake towards Coronet Peak, has won gold medals for both its wine and restaurant.
With ready access to organic fruit and vegetables, the highest quality beef, lamb, venison and seafood, local restaurants are earning international reputations for excellence. This will extend to the fine eating establishments at Jacks Point, sourcing only the best of local produce.
If that hasn't left you completely exhausted there is simply the experience of being amidst the mountains - the constantly changing light, the spectacle of the nor'wester coming in across the alps, or the still, clear mornings of winter. From anywhere at Jacks Point watch the evening shadows deepen on the successive ridge lines to the west and the last of the gold creep up The Remarkables. Then there is the night sky - a luminescent display of the Southern Cross and Milky Way, and on a rare, winter night the extraordinary spectacle of Aurora Australis lighting up the Southern Sky. Then, one needs precious little else.

The Masterplan
The Golf Course
With a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of the razorback Remarkables mountain range and an armchair view of an outstanding lake and mountain panorama, Jack's Point Golf Course is not only one of the most spectacular in the world, but as an 18 hole par 72 championship course it offers golfers of any calibre a challenging and unforgettable experience.
The course works with nature, not against it. Designed with minimal excavation, the course measures 6338 metres (6986 yards) from the championship tees and is built on the most spectacular of Jack's Point terrain, weaving through tussock grasslands, dramatic rock outcrops, steep bluffs and swathes of native bush to the edge of Lake Wakatipu.
The Developers
Jack's Point was conceived and has been nurtured for over 15 years by the international master-planning practice, Darby Partners Limited. Darby Partners has engaged the finest architects, designers, and resort developers in the world to ensure that Jack’s Point will become a real community embraced by both the local and global community.
Darby Partners:
Darby Partners Limited is a multi-disciplinary development planning, design and project management practice. The New Zealand-based firm has extensive national and international experience with prestigious property development and resort projects.
John Darby is Darby Partners' principal, has been involved in property projects for over 20 years as both an investor and consultant. John is a registered landscape architect and Harvard trained golf course architect and resort planner. He is the prime mover behind Jack's Point, and the Jack's Point Golf Course is the 6th he has designed - including neighbouring Millbrook, and The Hills in Queenstown (home to the 2008 NZ Open.)
John Darby and Darby Partners have been responsible for a number of celebrated and award-winning projects. These include: Denerau Island Resort in Fiji, Clearwater Resort near Christchurch, Blanket Bay Lodge and Wyuna Station near Glenorchy (head of Lake Wakatipu), and closer to home the Steamer Wharf Village in Queenstown, Amisfield Winery and Millbrook Resort.
The Architects
The Jack's Point Village Master architect is Ian Athfield. Recipient of over 60 national and international awards, made a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit in 1998, and past President of the NZ Institute of Architecture, he is arguably the most respected and celebrated architect in the country.
When asked by John Darby, of Darby Partners and the originator of Jack's Point, to be involved at Jack's, Athfield twice turned him down.
But a year later, seeing 'the work Darby Partners had done within that landscape', he accepted, saying, 'Jack's Point is an amazing opportunity to do something very well'.
Athfield works alongside a team of other celebrated architects including local Arrowtown architect Anna-Marie Chin, and internationally acclaimed and award winning Tim Hay of FearonHay Architects. No architect works in isolation; there is continuous peer review, scrutiny and rigorous cross analysis of every element of design.
The People
The region boasts one continuous story of hard won treasure, or 'taonga'. Maori came by here in search of pounamu, or greenstone. Europeans arrived in their droves hungry for the rich veins of gold in the Shotover River. But, arguably, the smartest among them looked up from their diggings, and liking what they saw - 'taonga' of another kind - decided to stay.
Perhaps it's the legacy of early pioneers like Rees, or perhaps it's as a result of rubbing shoulders with the rugged edged landscape, but there has always been an indefinable quality to the population of Queenstown and surrounds - often self-starters with vision, energy, tenacity and an edge of sophistication. This is certainly true of the community at Jack's Point.
They're also a fascinating bunch of people, diverse in interests (and incomes) ensuring a healthy and balanced society. Wealthy or middle income, young and old, visitor or resident, there are a number of ways one can live at Jack's Point. You can build your own home - be it a family home amongst the established neighbourhoods or a more luxurious establishment on one of the 36 Preserve sites; you can purchase an apartment in The Village, stay in, or own, a hotel suite; you can rent a house or apartment or maintain a live/work studio. Offering a range of lifestyles ensures a stable and diversified population resulting in economic sustainability and improving the quality of life for the entire community.
In this way Jack's Point will be a vibrant, 'real' town, above all a home for up to 5000 people - local, national and international residents and visitors. It will also, however, be a sought after destination in its own right, the 'resort' merging subtly, and comfortably into the resident community, the central village being a vibrant hub of day and nightlife. As much as it draws on the international reputation of Queenstown, Jack's Point will provide a distinctive alternative with its own character and energy, to complement, rather than compete, with its neighbour.
Home, international destination, Jacks is also simply a launch pad - into the wilds of the surrounding lake and mountainscape. Jack's Point residents or visitors are inevitably people who care deeply, and indulge themselves thoroughly, in the surrounding environment - skiing, tramping, fishing etc. Similarly, as an inclusive community, the trails, lakefront, picnic spots and village facilities are open to be explored and enjoyed by anyone in the area.
In this way Jack's Point provides an invaluable contribution to the region as a whole. Many of those who work here have already chosen to live here - architects, designers, fishing guides or mountaineers - simply because they aspire to the quality of life Jack's Point offers. But also - just as their forebears had - they recognize the place as the treasure it is, and choose to be a part of that.
